Dr. Brian Conway is a leading infectious disease physician, researcher and educator whose career spans over three decades of transforming the cascade of care for individuals living with HIV, Hepatitis C, and opiate addiction in British Columbia. He is the medical director of the Vancouver Infectious Diseases Centre (VIDC) and an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University.
At VIDC and its partner institution the Vancouver Urban Health Centre (VUHC), Dr. Conway has implemented the innovative “Four-Legged Chair Model”, incorporating medical treatment, psychological support, addiction medicine, and social services—to deliver compassionate, low-barrier care to vulnerable inner-city populations in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) and beyond.
He has been involved in many of the foundational studies establishing the efficacy of current oral HCV therapies. Using the VIDC/VUHC model of care, he has led the twin GRAND PLAN and CHIME studies. These showed that, when delivered in a way that optimizes adherence and engagement in care, both sofosbuvir/velpatasvir and glecaprevir/pibrentasvir are highly effective for the treatment of HCV infection even in the most vulnerable populations, such as houseless fentanyl users.
